GINSENG

"makes an older man cocksure, and a younger man secure, makes an older woman younger, and a younger woman hunger ...Ginseng" --Appalachian folk song

Ginseng roots are inspiration for folk stories and much modern medical speculation. Many claims are unfounded or exaggerated. Nonetheless, ginseng is a scientifically proven adaptogenic remedy. Actually the term ginseng has become the common name for a class of tonic herbs, which demonstrate a wide variety of potential therapeutic uses.

Panax ginseng has been glorified in texts dating back over 2000 years. The genus name Panax is derived from the Latin word panacea meaning "cure all." Korean and Chinese ginsengs are true Panax ginsengs.

The Physicians' Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines indicates its use for "lack of stamina" and " as a tonic for invigoration and fortificatio Vn in times of fatigue and debility and for declining capacity to work and concentrate. It is also used during convalescence." Ginseng is an ingredient of most medicinal blends used for immune enhancing and harmonizing purposes in countries where doctors are only paid when their patients stay healthy.

Ginseng's adaptogenic (or normalizing and balancing) action increases the body's ability to handle all types of stress. Russian research shows that elderly patients adopt improved mental outlooks, and that cosmonauts adapt to the rigors of space travel more easily while using ginseng. The 1994 Jesse Owens International Trophy Award was presented to Wang Junxia, the record-breaking long distance runner for the Peoples Republic of China. Wang Junxia and China's 1993 World Champion Women's Track Team used a ginseng formula in training.

Red Korean ginseng is considered to be the most energizing ginseng. Red ginseng is not a variety, but actually indicates that a steaming process was used to prepare it into a potent yang/warming tonic. Korea is as proud of its ginseng as the British are of their Land Rovers. Korean ginseng carries the Royal Seal and is grown by ancient !00% organic cultivation methods. The best ginseng roots are at least six years old, and the Korean government inspection standards insure that the finest brands like IL HWA are ideal.

Chinese ginseng is generally considered to be weaker, plus cultivation and inspection practices are not as rigid. But the effects are similar and the ginseng is less expensive. The dried white ginseng is sometimes cured with rock candy for a more yin moistening effect.

Ginseng is preferable to the popular American stimulants, coffee & cola, because it doesn't possess the detrimental effects of caffeine, or the highs & lows of blood sugar swings. This makes it ideal for occasional use when endurance and mental clarity are required, as in long road trips, studying for exams, or strenuous physical tasks.

The Herbal Encyclopedia, used by the University of Canada medical herbalism class, states, "Ginseng influences the endocrine system...The Panax variety of Ginseng has a unique effect on the potency of the male hormone (considered to increase the androgens) and also strengthens the male sexual glands (the testes). It thus becomes of value in cases of impotency because the increases in the hormone level may increase the sexual appetite."

Further, "Because the Panax Ginseng species increases male hormone production, its long term use is not suggested for the female...Many herbalists suggest that females should use the Panax variety for no more tha Sn six weeks at a time..." (The encyclopedia clarifies that this warning does not apply to Panax quinquifolium/American ginseng). In addition, Panax ginseng should not be used as a substitute for sleep, or in prolonged large doses. Ironically, Ginseng abuse or misuse can lead to irritability, exhaustion, and heart problems.

America +n ginseng creates a cooling gentle long-lasting energy perfect for summer. It is so revered in the orient that 95% of the crop grown in the USA is exported to that part of the world. Like other ginsengs, American ginseng is traditionally taken with honey and other herbs.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is not a true ginseng, but is usually listed as one, due to its similar but milder adaptogenic effects. However, don't expect lots of energy. In fact, the Chinese consider Siberian ginseng to be the best remedy for insomnia. Its calming capacity makes it a popular treatment for bronchitis and chronic lung ailments. Also good for high cholesterol and insomnia, it is indicated for the most delicate situations when ginseng is considered to be too stimulating.

Tang Shen !(codonopsis pilosa) is favored for its cumulative long-term actions, and helpfulness in instances of digestive deficiency, hyperacidity, and inflammatory conditions. It tonifies the spleen and pancreas, making it favorable for diabetics. It can even be used as protection from radiation damage, according to Jade Remedies, a Chinese herbal reference for the West. Little wonder that ginseng is legendary.
