Winter is fast approaching, and
if you are looking for ways to keep your spirits
high and body alert during the slower winter
months, there are remedies local individuals can
indulge in to keep their mind and body fit. Gail
Doorenbos, the owner of La Boheme/Oxford Herbal
shop has three recommendations of her own for the
wintertime blues.
"Winter has shorter days and
less sunlight. People are really affected by this,"
said Doorenbos, who has owned La Boheme for 12
years. "Scandinavian countries have done a lot of
research on light effect behavior. I heard about
full spectrum light bulbs 15 years ago and using
them really makes a big difference for people..
They're a softer quality and much better for your
eyes and spirit."
Along with there types of light
bulbs, the use of aromatherapy, ginseng, and
massage have been proven to increase people's
spirits and energy during longer periods of
inactivity. Using all natural, non-synthetic
products allows the body to feel rejuvenated and
alive.

"The sense of smell is the most
primitive and least cognitive of all the senses," said
Doorenbos. "Smell is a much more subliminal thing.
Working with essential oils form the real scents if a flower
is as uplifting experience, especially in the winter."
Another product that is helpful
for a slow, lethargic mood is Kava Kava, a product
of the South Pacific Islands. Kava is the root of a
plant that is taken in a tea, capsule, or
alcohol-based liquid form. It has been helpful in
the communication and relaxation process for people
suffering form anxiety and stress. Along the same
lines, Red Korean Ginseng will give individuals the
most energy during the winter days.
"Ginseng helps the body to
adjust to aches and pains and gives you the most
energy to get up and get moving. It's a tonic for
the nervous system," said Doorenbos. "It's used for
depression in older people and helps replenish your
body. Hwa is one company that waits seven years to
harvest their ginseng root. That type of root
really makes a difference because it matures and
gathers all the nutrients."
